Think teens and adults trying to stay in touch with friends are the only ones who can benefit from rapidly growing social media networks? Think again. Small businesses can greatly benefit by using social media to promote their business. In a 2011 statistic, Nielson found that social networks and blogs account for nearly a quarter of total time spent on the internet (Dodaro). Another statistic shows that, on Facebook alone, the number of registered users has grown 82 percent throughout the past year from 350 million to 640 million (Henrikson).

Small businesses can increase their exposure by reaching out to multiple people at one time using social networks. Social media networks also create an optimum environment for consumers to learn about a small business. Many people will get on social media networks simply to shop, get to know a company, and read others’ feedback; the more people that like or comment on products, the further the reach. According to Phil Mershon in his article “Small Businesses Benefit Most From Social Media, Study Reveals:”

  • 88 percent of all marketers found that using social media helps them increase their exposure.
  • 72 percent said that using social medias helps increase the traffic to their sites and subscriptions.

Social media networks are designed so people can communicate with each other one-on-one at a personal level. Take advantage of that by developing personal relationships with your fans and followers, and you’ll develop trust and loyalty as lasting side-effects. When someone trusts your business, they can easily recommend you and share you with their friends. Loyalty is more important than ever in today’s connected world, and you can accomplish it using social media.
